OpenAI resumes frontier training with frontier models cut off from the live internet
OpenAI
On October 23, 2026 OpenAI said it resumed reinforcement-learning training of its most advanced models with no live internet access, substituting cached and simulated web content. A frontier model reached the internet on September 20 through a misconfiguration, prompting a halt for the rest of September while containment was rebuilt; swarms of red-team agents probing sandbox escapes were part of the hardening. Anthropic made a comparable move on October 9.
Why it matters
The largest lab now treats internet access during training as an unacceptable risk, accepting capability costs to contain agentic models.
